The Story of Our Davenport, Iowa Orchestral Instrument Boutique

It was in the early 1990s when Doug Davis, now co-owner of Griggs Music, identified orchestral strings as an underserved area in and around Davenport and also identified our store as an underutilized resource. For nearly 50 years, Griggs had been carrying orchestral instruments and accessories intended to accommodate beginning and school musicians. However, it was only after some very frank discussions in 2009 with one of Davenport’s most respected orchestra directors that specific shortcomings of our orchestral instrument department were clearly identified. After that discussion, we at Griggs Music made a critical decision to approach things differently. A new mission would begin, one that would ultimately have a powerful impact on the orchestral community.

An Orchestral Instrument Boutique Inside of Our Davenport Store: Brady Street Violins at Griggs Music is Your Source for the Highest Quality Stringed Instruments Available in Southeast Iowa and Northwest Illinois

Our new mission was not an easy undertaking. The change of direction and philosophy required new resources, and our quest led us to Pennsylvania and the shop of violin expert Bill Zeswitz. It took us to Jim Eaton and other suppliers of high quality, hand-made instruments. For the first time, we were introduced to smaller, exclusive luthiers whose instruments represented tremendous value for our customers. Along the way, Dan Draley, a Dewitt, Iowa resident and a recognized authority of older, rare instruments provided valuable insight and inspiration. Perhaps the greatest continuing contribution to our journey was made by a local Quad Cities native, David Pope. Renowned for his skill as a master instrument technician, as testified to by string players the world over, David began to offer his services to Griggs. To this day, he provides Griggs Music with professional services and valuable guidance on the finer instruments we carry. The Griggs Orchestral Instrument Department underwent a transformation in 2009, coming to be known as Brady Street Violins.

Since then, we have continued to upgrade our entire orchestral inventory, retiring our poorer instruments and replacing them with improved models with superior build quality and fittings. We reworked our leasing program and increased the value that Griggs orchestral customers received. As school orchestra programs discovered our commitment and continual improvement, we became the orchestral instrument provider of choice for many string programs in Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois.

Michael Wahlmann is our orchestra specialist, in our Davenport store every day except Thursday. Come see Michael and let him assist you in picking out your perfect instrument!

Michael joined the Griggs Music staff in 2015. He is a graduate of Augustana College and has been playing cello since 1982. As a cellist, Michael has taught privately since 2004, plays in local string quartet Quartrio, the Clinton Symphony and has played in groups from pit-orchestras for the Clinton Showboat Theater, Quad City Music Guild, Opera at Augustana and Opera Quad Cities to groups backing acts like The Moody Blues, Transiberian Orchestra, Mannheim Steamroller and Josh Groban at the iWireless Center.  As a vocalist Michael is co-music and choir director for St. John’s Lutheran Church in Rock Island, sang with Nova Singers for 20 years, and occasionally, Quad City Choral Arts and Opera at Augustana’s summer collaboration with Rock Island’s Genesius Guild. On Sunday evenings Michael can be heard over the radio airwaves of Northwestern Illinois and Eastern Iowa hosting WVIK-Quad Cities NPR’s classical program, Serenade.
